Book: Yum-Yum Bento Box

If you’re looking for a new source of inspiration for making cute bento boxes, there’s a book coming out in early June that might just do the trick. Even the cover of Yum-Yum Bento Box: Fresh Recipes for Adorable Lunches is adorable, and I’m curious to know how they created some of the dishes (like that pig hamburger!).

The book is scheduled to come out on June 2, so you can pre-order the book on Amazon, or check out the official book site for more information. The authors also have their own bento-themed blogs; Crystal Watanabe posts at Adventures in Bentomaking and Makiko Ogawa is at Cute Obento.

Jelly Coco Game

Jelly Coco is a fairly simple game: catch colorful jellies, then stack them up to earn coins or lives. Don’t drop them, and watch out for the rotten black jellies (those go in the dump)!

Sushi Tile Game

Match the sushi pieces by flipping the tiles in this lovely Flash game. The sushi graphics will make your mouth water, and the music and sound effects are quite nice as well.

UFO Convenience Store Flash Game

Last night, I came across this Japanese Flash game, which I would imagine was created as a promo for Nissin, the company that makes UFO noodle bowls. The game is pretty simple; you just pour water into the customers’ bowls so they can have their lunch. Sometimes you run out of water, and watch out for customers when they get angry; if one yells, you lose! If you can get up to 100 bowls served, you win.

Book: Cute Yummy Time

I was browsing through books at a store today, when I came across a recently published book called Cute Yummy Time: 70 Recipes for the Cutest Food You’ll Ever Eat. It has lots of recipes to make cute food on your own, including food shaped like animals and other fun shapes, from baked goods to decorated sandwiches. You can see a demo video on the Amazon book page, where author La Carmina shows how to make pig-shaped bread.

The same author also has a book about strange theme restaurants in Tokyo that looks interesting, called Crazy, Wacky Theme Restaurants: Tokyo.

Decofuri Rice Coloring

Decofuri is a food coloring specifically meant to be used with rice, to help decorate and create bento box designs. I’m not sure if it’s available outside of Japan, but the company’s web site has some cute ideas for food designs like the one pictured here.

Bananagranola on Flickr has also tested out this product by making some flower-shaped riceballs.
